Background of UBS Hong Kong Open Championship
First held in 1959, the Open is Hong Kong's oldest professional sporting event; and is considered one of the "jewels in the crown" of Asian golf. It has always been staged at the same venue; the historic Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, and is sanctioned by both the European and the Asian Tours.
The Open has a unique history and tradition, and it is the only tournament in the world apart from the US Masters in Augusta, to be played each year at the same venue for so long. Remarkably, 9 major winners have won the tournament including golfing legends Peter Thomson, Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Bernhard Langer and Jose Maria Olazabal–a list of champions unrivalled by any other tournament in the region. Recent winners include Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington and Miguel Angel Jimenez, the current champion.
Considered by many as Asia's Heritage tournament, "UBS Hong Kong Open" is regarded as one of the biggest and most prestigious golf championships in the region. The tournament has formed part of the European PGA Tour since 2001 and attracts some of the world's best golfers.
