Background of Hong Kong DanceSport Festival

"Hong Kong DanceSport Festival", hosted by Hong Kong DanceSport Association Limited, is an annual significant DanceSport event, including a series of international and local competitions, as well as fabulous performance. The Festival is also the first DanceSport event awarded with "M" Mark by the Major Sports Events Committee under the Sports Commission.

The 1st Hong Kong DanceSport Festival was held in July 2007. The highlighted event was "International DanceSport Extravaganza", with International Open and local competitions, carnival and exhibition. The most memorable success was "Guinness World Records Breaking–Largest Dance by Couples", including more than a thousand of performers dancing Cha-Cha-Cha in Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

To encourage more participation from the public, The 2nd Hong Kong DanceSport in March 2008 was held in the largest venue in Hong Kong, AsiaWorld-Expo, with a maximum audience capacity of 12,000. Top world-ranking athletes from more than 20 countries/regions strived for excellence in Asian Pacific Championships and Hong Kong Open on 9 March 2008.  1300 dancers in brilliant costumes presented the first ever largest Latin American dance and Standard dance performance. Hong Kong Youth Squad Team also showcased their elite-class performance.

With 2-year history, Hong Kong DanceSport Festival has successfully attracted more than 50,000 counts of audience.  The 3rd Hong Kong DanceSport Festival will be held in February and March 2009, including world-class performance by professional and amateur top dancers, DanceSport demonstrations by Hong Kong Youth Squad Team, DanceSport competitions for schools and DanceSport exhibition, etc.

DanceSport, comprising 5 Latin American dances and 5 Standard dances, incorporates the essence of sports, arts and entertainment.  With participants from aged 3 to 80, DanceSport enhances the spirit of "Sport for All".  In addition, Hong Kong athletes can advance their skills via competing with international athletes; while international athletes can obtain high world ranking by joining International Open in the Festival. DanceSport in Hong Kong and worldwide can benefit from Hong Kong DanceSport Festival towards sustainable development.

To advocate the spirit of "Sport for All", to promote the development of DanceSport, and to stage Hong Kong as an internationally well-known DanceSport city, "Hong Kong DanceSport Festival" is organised annually by Hong Kong DanceSport Association Limited.
