Background of Tour of Hong Kong Shanghai
"Tour of Hong Kong Shanghai" held its inaugural race in May 2006, after the signing of the "Hong Kong–Shanghai Sports Exchange and Co-operation Agreement" between the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Municipal Government of Shanghai in May 2004. It is sponsored by authorities from both sides; organised by Chinese Cycling Association, Hong Kong Cycling Association and Shanghai Sports Bureau; and is recognised by the Union Cycliste Internationale and the General Administration of Sports of China.
It is honored as an "M" Mark Event by the Major Sports Events Committee of Hong Kong's Sports Commission. It also shoulders the important responsibilities of publicising "the successful implementation of One Country, Two Systems" to overseas and of promoting Hong Kong as the "Asia's capital of major sports events".
To achieve the goal to be the Asian equivalent event of the "Tour of France", "Tour of Hong Kong Shanghai" has developed into a 7 days 7 stages event with 60 cyclists with 11 professional and national teams from around the world in 2008. They cycled through the most prosperous parts of China–Hong Kong, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai from 19th to 25th October.
